Our Story

The Schult family lovingly restored the Dunn Lake Schoolhouse to how Teri remembered it as a student, opening it as the Dunn Lake Schoolhouse Market in July of 2024. In addition to being a market for Ken's beautiful woodworking and Teri's delicious pies, it also serves as a celebration of our history with many of the original documents and historical artifacts for you to enjoy while picking up a pie.

Our One-Room School

The Dunn Lake School opened in 1910 with the support, skills, and work of the community. We haven't found a picture yet that shows the entire outside - here is a drawing from Teri's memories.

Approximately 10-20 students attended Dunn Lake School each year until the 1950s when it closed. Not only did the owner, Teri (Brown) Schult attend class in this schoolhouse, so did her mother, Betty Jo (Clayton) Brown.

The first teacher who we have a record of is Dollie Oberg who taught from 1916-17. The last teacher, Ebba Stellrecht, taught from 1957 until the school closure in November of 1958.

The End of an Era

The Dunn Lake School closed in 1958 as part of a broader consolidation of rural one-room schoolhouses. We have the hand-cast ballots at the schoolhouse - the vote was 14 (against) and 19 (in favor) to consolidate into the Spooner Schools.

From School to Home

After the Dunn Lake School closed in the 1950s it was transformed into a family home. Many people in the neighborhood always have loved the propane tank turned into a race car, a beautiful creation by the owners. It received a new coat of paint in 2024, but we love how many people in the neighborhood use it as a neighborhood landmark.

From Home to Market

In 2020 Ken and Teri purchased the home and began to transform it into its third life as a market. In July of 2024 they officially opened the doors to Dunn Lake Schoolhouse Market and home to Schoolhouse Pies.
